October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we have one simple message for every woman in our community: take a moment for yourself this month.
We know how full life gets. Between work, family, errands and everything in between, our own health often slides to the bottom of the to-do list. But when it comes to breast cancer, a few minutes of attention can make a lifesaving difference. Consider this your friendly reminder, and your permission, to put yourself first.
Why early detection matters
About 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. That's a lot of moms, sisters, daughters and friends. The good news is that when breast cancer is found early, it is often more treatable. Regular mammograms can find changes that could be cancer years before any symptoms appear.
That's why awareness isn't just about wearing pink. It's about taking action.
Know when to get screened
The American Cancer Society, our partner in breast cancer research, recommends the following for women at average risk:
Ages 40 to 44: You have the option to start yearly mammograms.
Ages 45 to 54: Get a mammogram every year.
Ages 55 and older: You can switch to a mammogram every other year, or continue yearly if you prefer.
Some medical organizations recommend that all women begin screening at 40, so the best next step is to talk with your doctor about what's right for you. If you have a strong family history of breast cancer, a known gene mutation such as BRCA or other risk factors, you may need to start earlier or have additional screening. Your doctor can help you make a plan.
Pass it on
One of the most powerful things you can do this month is remind someone else. Text your mom, your sister or your best friend and ask when her last mammogram was. Offer to go together, or simply check in. A small nudge from someone who cares can be what gets an appointment on the calendar.
Why this month matters to Save The Girls
For us, Breast Cancer Awareness Month isn't just a date on the calendar. It's at the heart of who we are. Save The Girls was inspired by our founder Tami Lange's sister-in-law, who was battling breast cancer when the idea first took shape. Even our name is a reminder of why this cause means so much to us.
That's why giving back has been part of our mission from day one. We donate 10% of our profits to breast cancer research, and we're proud to be direct partners with the American Cancer Society's breast cancer research division. Thanks to you, we've donated more than $160,000 so far, and every dollar brings us closer to a future without breast cancer.
Research is one way we get there. The other happens one appointment at a time. So this October, we're asking you to do one thing for yourself: schedule your screening, check in with your body and remind the women you love to do the same. Together, we're making a difference. 💕
This post is for general awareness and is not medical advice. Please talk with your healthcare provider about your personal risk and screening plan.
